Sunshine of My Life

Mister Sunshines - Front Terrace

It’s the attention to detail that regularly brings us back to this café. It’s the energetic and welcoming staff (“…hello handsome, welcome back…”) and the instant vibe that flows on as you step inside. It’s the handmade American Oak service bench that greats you, the stereo always acutely tuned into good soulful or folky moods (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Bon Iver, Massive Attack et al). It’s the dining furniture, plates, knives and forks; most of which may well have belonged to your grandparents and gives you a sense of warming and homely nostalgia. Its the care factor, the obvious passion for the local community and likewise the greater environment. And it’s the eco edge with pallet project centre-pieces in the front terrace which makes Mister Sunshine’s what it is.

Open 7 days a week Mister Sunshine’s offer both breakfast and lunch menus with no set start/finish times. If you have a sweet tooth like us, we highly recommend the French Toast which has evolved into an all-time great.

We caught up with owners Prue and Eddie to discuss the evolution of Sunshine’s over its short 7 month spell and just what we can expect for the future. Currently Mister Sunshine’s sources 90% of their produce from within a 100km radius, mostly via the well respected A&J Produce, but the plans are to significantly reduce this radius as local barter systems are established; trading excess fresh fruit from local trees for coffees (try the peach cakes!). Eddie has even hinted that the creation of a Sunshine’s garden is the next project they have up their sleeve.

Prue and Eddie recently posted on their Facebook site:

“…We would like to thank everyone who has walked through our yellow door during the past six months. We have been overwhelmed by the support shown by the local community and are constantly surprised by the number of new faces popping in….”
